Australia’s limited-overs captain Aaron Finch says the hosts will have to strike the ‘right balance’ when they face Virat Kohli in the first Test as the Indian captain can prove ‘heartless’ to the opposing team when over-provoked.
The rivalry between India and Australia on the cricket field is well known. There is a war of words, speeches and disputes between the two teams. The series last played in 2018-19 saw a heated debate between Kohli and Tim Paine. Finch told the ‘Sydney Morning Herald’, ‘There will be occasions when tensions arise. There is a need to balance it. There is no need to provoke Kohli as doing so can prove to be merciless for the opposing teams.
The first Test starts in Adelaide on 17 December. After this, Kohli will return home due to the birth of his child. Finch said that the Indian captain has become very relaxed now. He said, ‘Now that has changed a lot. Remains quite calm on the field and understands the flow of the game.
Finch, who played for Royal Challengers Bangalore under Kohli’s captaincy in the Indian Premier League, said, “I was most surprised by how much preparation he himself does.” But he never focuses on the opponent more than his team. Even in the IPL, he had full faith in the playing XI.
Finch, who has confronted Kohli many times on the field, said that it was nice to see his form. He said, “We played many great series in which as a player he was at a different level and also very aggressive. It was very nice to see him calm like this. ‘
