Barcelona president Joseph Bartomeu resigned from his position amid differences with star footballer Lionel Messi. Also revealed that this Spanish club is keen to join the new Super League of the top European teams. Bartomeu also announced the resignation of all board directors after the club’s worst season in the past decade. His effort is being seen as an escape from the censure motion, for which voting is to be held in the next few weeks.
Bartomeu wanted to delay voting during the Corona virus epidemic citing the health concerns of the club’s 110,000 members but local officials made it clear Tuesday that the voting would be according to a pre-determined schedule. More than 20,000 members of Barcelona have signed a petition demanding that Bartomeu and his board members face a motion of censure.
Earlier Messi had said that he wanted to leave the club. He criticized the club directors last season. He also accused Bartomeu of turning away from the promise. Bartomeu also resigned and announced his approval to be part of the European Super League. He said, ‘I can declare that we have completed all the formalities to be part of the European Super League. The decision to play in this competition now needs to be approved at the next club meeting.
Bartomeu said in a statement, “It is a thoughtful, calm and collective decision to resign by my directors, who have supported me with complete honesty and commitment and have made many sacrifices for Barcelona.” Bartomeu also stated that Barcelona has agreed to join a new European Super League.
