BCCI AGM today, T20 World Cup tax exemption and IPL teams will be important discussion

Several issues will remain prominent in the 89th annual meeting of the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) to be held today. The deadline for the International Cricket Council to give an assurance of full tax exemption for the T20 World Cup to be held in India next year is just a week from the end. Apart from this, the inclusion of two new IPL teams and formation of various cricket committees will also be on the agenda.

The ICC has given the board a deadline of 31 December to guarantee full tax exemption for the T20 World Cup to be held in India in October November next year. The tournament will be played in the UAE if there is no tax exemption. Even before this there has been a tradition of giving tax exemption to global tournaments but under current tax laws, sports events do not get such concession. Now it has to be seen what the BCCI’s stand on this issue is.

This issue of tax exemption between BCCI and ICC is not new. Even before this, the ICC had threatened to deduct BCCI’s annual revenue share to recover the tax imposed on the T20 World Cup in India in 2016. Meanwhile, the selection of the new vice-president of BCCI, Rajiv Shukla, will also be formally announced at this meeting, who have been elected unanimously. Brijesh Patel will continue to head the IPL Governing Council.

There is also speculation that BCCI President Saurabh Ganguly will also be questioned on his advertisements and the matter of conflict of interest, but there is no clarity on this yet. Two new teams will also be approved for IPL 2022. A senior board official said, “It is not possible for 2021 to have ten teams in the IPL at this time. The tender process and auction for this will take a long time and in such a short time it is not possible.

“It is right that approval is taken and there is a 94 match tournament in 2022,” he said. BCCI Secretary and Ganguly will continue to be representatives of the Board on the ICC forums. If the BCCI supports the inclusion of cricket in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, its autonomy will end and it will come under the Sports Ministry, being the National Sports Federation. The formation of various committees of BCCI has also been stalled for a long time. It is believed that a new Cricket Advisory Committee will be formed which will elect three new selectors.
