Test debut in 2002
It was in 2002 that Parthiv went to England with the Indian team. The account did not open in the first innings but saved India from defeat by scoring 19 runs in the second. Patel’s batting was praised. He started the innings and looked comfortable against the fast bowlers. He had shots like cut and bridge. But the problem was in wicketkeeping. Questions were often raised about him.
No encouragement at losing finger
Patel lost a finger of his hand when he was nine years old. But he did not give up and kept the focus on cricket. When Patel came to Team India, a lot of experiments were being done about wicketkeeping.
Good batting, question on wicketkeeping
Patel’s batting used to go in his favor. He performed very well in the home series against the West Indies in the years 2002-2003. But after that he could not leave an impact. There was still a question mark on wicketkeeping. Especially, his keeping in front of the spinners could not be said to be good.
Steamed innings in Sydney – Out of the team – Return after four years
He played an aggressive 62-run innings in Sydney in 2003–2004 and then scored 69 runs, opening the innings against Pakistan. But in the year 2004, he was dropped from the team. Four years later in 2008, he got a chance for a Test match against Sri Lanka.
Last test in 2016
Parthiv was included in the squad for the three-Test home series against England in 2016. He started the innings and hit two half-centuries.
Return to ODI team after six years
In 2010, he became part of the ODI team after six years. He was tried as an opener as an injury replacement. He then made four half-centuries in 10 innings against New Zealand, West Indies and England. However, he made his debut against ODI New Zealand in 2003. He could not impress much with the bat. There was not a single half century in the opening 15 matches. In 2004, he was dropped from the ODI team. In 2012, he played his last ODI against Sri Lanka in Brisbane.
Gujarat made Ranji champion
The same season he captained Gujarat. Under his captaincy, Gujarat won the Ranji Trophy for the first time.
Steve Waugh did the sled
In 2003-04, he went on a tour of Australia with Team India. During one match, he sled veteran Australia captain Steve Waugh playing his last series. Waugh replied that I have been playing cricket for as many years as you are. So it would be good to keep quiet.
Rohit told better T20 captain
Patel described Rohit Sharma as a better T20 captain than Virat Kohli. After the victory of Mumbai Indians in the IPL, Patel had said that Virat is not a bad captain but since Rohit has won multinational tournaments like Nidahas Trophy, Asia Cup as well as has won IPL five times in which a good performer will be directly in the Indian team. If found a place, then Rohit’s captaincy is better in his eyes.
