- Middle order veteran batsman Cheteshwar Pujara is seen struggling against off-spin
- If seen, his lack was seen in Ranji Trophy against Vidarbha in 2019.
- Now Leach has dismissed Pujara three times in five innings of the last three Tests.
After being the man of the series in Tests on the tour of Australia in 2019, Indian Test team batsman Cheteshwar Pujara appeared to be trapped in the final of Ranji Trophy against Vidarbha’s left arm spinner Aditya Sarwate. Pujara was representing Saurashtra at the time in the Ranji Trophy final and after facing 16 balls in both innings, he was dismissed for one run and then without opening the account.
Now in the ongoing Test series against England, Pujara is seen to be stuck against left arm spinner Jack Leach. Leach has dismissed Pujara three times in five innings of the last three Tests. Former Indian selector and coach Anshuman Gaikwad said, “Cheteshcher is using his legs, pulling. Everything is fine. But many times, he is playing. When he is in a dilemma, he does not fully use his legs against left arm spinners and this is where he gets stuck and is caught out in the lbw and slip.
Similarly, Pujara also appeared trapped against Vidarbha two years ago. Vidarbha captain Faiz Fazal said that he did not want to disclose the team’s strategies, but he had planned to stop Pujara inside the crease.
Fazal said, ‘We all know that his footwork is quite good. He does not like to play at the crease. So we thought we had to stop them from taking singles and rotating strikes. We put fielding accordingly and the bowlers bowled accordingly and did not let them take a single. Aditya bowled according to plan.
