Chinese smartphone brands are at a big disadvantage. Their market share fell to 72 percent in the April-June quarter from 81 percent in January-March. Counterpoint research attributed this to the dwindling supply of brands such as Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo and Realme and the anti-China sentiments of users.

According to Counterpoint Research, India's smartphone shipments decreased by 51 percent year-on-year in the April-June quarter of 2020. The biggest reason behind this was the lockdown caused by Covid-19in April. During this time, the shipments of the companies were zero.

50 million smartphone userbase

The report also said that for the first time India's smartphone base has crossed 50 crore. Shilpi Jain, research analyst at Counterpoint Research, said that due to local manufacturing, R&D operations, attractive offers of Chinese brand, users have very few options to choose from. Jain further states that in the era of globalization it is difficult to label a product in the name of the country as the components required to produce the product are imported from different countries.

This change in the market has given Samsung and other Indian brands such as Micromax and Lava a good opportunity to increase their market share. At the same time, due to the partnership of Jio and Google, the entry of very affordable Android 4G smartphones is going to be in the market soon. This may increase the difficulties of sugar brands.

Market is gaining momentum

The agency says that the market is slowly getting normal. This can be gauged from the fact that only a 0.3 percent decrease in year-on-year was observed in June.

Samsung showed power, Vivo left behind

In the second quarter of 2020, Xiaomi was the market leader with a 29 percent share. At the same time, Samsung held the second position with 26 exhibitions, leaving Vivo behind. It has the largest market share of Samsung in the last two years. Vivo's market share was 17 percent during this period. While Realme and Oppo registered 11 and 9 percent share respectively.
