All-rounder Chris Woakes admitted that he had to pull out of the second leg of the IPL to attend England’s hectic schedule, which includes the T20 World Cup and the Ashes tour. Delhi Capitals said on Monday that Woakes had pulled out of the tournament due to personal reasons.
The franchise then revealed that they have signed Australia’s Ben Dwarshuis as Woakes’ replacement. The second leg of IPL 2021 is to be held in UAE from Sunday. Its final match will take place on October 15 and eight days later, England have to start their campaign against the Windies in the T20 World.
Woakes was quoted as saying by The Guardian, ‘I joined the T20 World team. IPL got rescheduled at the end of our summer. Looking at the World Cup and the Ashes, time is short. I would have loved to be a part of IPL, but I also have to lose something. The World Cup and Ashes tour is huge. The situation that is being created due to Corona is strange, but it is very encouraging from the cricket point of view.
Besides Woakes, who played for Delhi Capitals, Jonny Bairstow (Sunrisers Hyderabad) and David Malan (Punjab Kings) also pulled out of the IPL. Woakes told ‘The Guardian’, ‘I had no idea I would be selected in the World Cup squad. The IPL schedule was revamped and now it is happening at this time.
