Everyone is praising the way the Indian cricket team showed sports and spirit in Australia. Meanwhile, there is another debate as to whether Ajinkya Rahane should be made the Test captain as he led the way in the absence of Virat Kohli. Former Indian wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta, however, thinks differently. Dasgupta said that it is wrong to think of removing Virat Kohli from Test captaincy.
Dasgupta said in a special conversation with our associate newspaper Times of India, ‘Sometimes it happens that the leaders stand up. This is what happened in Australia. Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jaspreet Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja went ahead and showed the spirit of the team but to say that Virat should be removed is wrong.

He said, ‘This is the same player (Virat Kohli) under whose leadership India created history of winning the Test series for the first time in Australia’s hosting. Team India became No.1 in Test cricket under Virat’s captaincy. I think the result of the England and New Zealand series was not in our favor, but to say that after only 3 matches that Virat should be removed is beyond my comprehension. ‘
He further said, ‘Don’t make a mistake, this is the same team that Virat Kohli has been making since 2015. It is not that I did not see a captain like Virat, but he only promoted the fast bowlers of this team. In today’s world, in international cricket, it is easy to have a bowling attack, you have the ability to take 20 wickets in a Test match. Virat did the same and elevated the fast bowlers in the priority list.

43-year-old Dasgupta said, “It is like I was playing with my old toy and now I want to remove it and buy a new one.” It is quite wrong that such a debate is happening while he was on Paternity Leave. It would be conceivable if Virat Kohli was in the entire series and his captaincy was questioned after failing as a batsman but he returned home after playing the same Test match.
The Indian team won 2–1 in the 4-match Test series. Virat returned home after playing a Test match in Adelaide, whose daughter was born on January 11. India played the remaining 3 Test matches under Ajinkya Rahane’s captaincy, 2 of which won and named the series. In this way he also retained the border-gavaskar trophy.
When the entire team was all out for 36 runs in the Adelaide Test, Dasgupta said, “It is not that India’s innings is not restricted to 36 runs in Adelaide but if a team does it then only the captain cannot be held responsible.”
The former wicketkeeper batsman said, ‘Now that we are on the way to the test championship final, it is unfair to question the captain. Kohli is never afraid of defeat. He has developed the same thinking and you see his team with the same thinking. After becoming captain, both his thinking and the game have changed.

He further said, ‘Virat is never afraid to give opportunities to anyone. Mayank Agarwal and Prithvi Saw got a chance. He also brought Rohit Sharma back into the Test team.
