Dispute over Jaitley’s idol at Delhi’s Kotla Stadium, Bedi resigns from DDCA, demands removal of names from stands

Highlights:

  • Bishan Singh Bedi asked Cricket Association to remove his name from the visitors’ gallery of Kotla
  • Bedi has also resigned from the membership of Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA)
  • Jaitley was the DDCA President for 14 years between 1999 and 2013, currently his son is the Chairman.

Disappointed with the decision to install the statue of late DDCA president Arun Jaitley at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground, legendary spinner Bishan Singh Bedi has asked the Cricket Association to remove his name from the visitors’ gallery. The gallery was named after him in 2017. It has also resigned from DDCA in protest. In a conversation with a TV channel, Bedi said that I have done what my Jamir said. Fetching a leader in a cricket ground does not suit. This thing is not coming in my mind. I am not stopping them from applying fetish. I say just remove my name from there.

Lashing out at the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), Bedi also gave up membership of the association, alleging nepotism and ‘placing administrators above cricketers’. In a letter to Rohan Jaitley, the current chairman of DDCA and son of Arun Jaitley, he said, ‘I am a very tolerant person but now my patience is breaking. DDCA has tested my patience and forced me to take this drastic step.

Bedi said, ‘So Mr. President, I am requesting you to remove my name from the stand which is in my name and it should be done with immediate effect. I am also leaving the membership of DDCA. ‘

Jaitley was the DDCA President for 14 years between 1999 and 2013. Cricket Association is thinking of putting a six-foot statue on Kotla in his memory. In 2017, the DDCA named the stands after Mohinder Amarnath and Bedi. Bedi said, ‘I have taken this decision very thoughtfully. I am not one of the people to insult respect. But we know that responsibility comes with respect. I am returning the honor to make sure that the values with which I have played cricket remain the same four decades after my retirement. ‘

He said that he was never interested in Jaitley’s style of work and always opposed decisions that he did not find right. He said, ‘Everyone knows my objection to the way he used to select people to run the work of DDCA. I once came out of a meeting at his house because he could not show the way out to a man who was being abusive.

Bedi said, ‘I am very strict in this matter. Probably quite old. But I am so proud of being an Indian cricketer that it was not considered necessary to attend the court of flattering Arun Jaitley. He said, ‘Ferozeshah Kotla Maidan was named after the late Arun Jaitley in Anan Phanan which was wrong but I thought that someday will come. But I was wrong. Now I heard that Arun Jaitley is putting a statue on Kotla. I can’t even imagine it. ‘

He said that the late Jaitley was originally a leader and Parliament should cherish his memories. He said, ‘Don’t celebrate failure with souvenirs and effigies. They have to forget. ‘

Bedi said, “People around you will not tell you that there are statues of WG Grace at the Lodgers, Sir Jack Hobbs at the Oval, Sir Don Bradman at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Sir Gary Sobers at Barbados and Shane Warne at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.” ‘ He said, ‘There should be role models related to sports on the playground. The place of the administrators is in their glass cabin. DDCA does not understand this global culture, so I think it is right to stay beyond it. I do not want to be part of a stadium that has wrong priorities. Where administrators are placed above cricketers. Please remove my name with immediate effect.
