But do you know about the UPI through which you pay, how it works. In this article today we are telling you in detail and in easy language about how UPI works.
Meaning of UPI:
UPI stands for – Unified Payment Interface (Unified Payment Interface). UPI allows instant transfer of money from one bank account to another through one’s mobile phone. These payments can only be made through the app on the mobile device. The special thing is that through UPI you can transfer money to anyone anytime in 24 hours.

What do you need to use UPI?
To use UPI, you must have a bank account with a member bank, ie your bank allows you to use the UPI facility. Some of the member banks include State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank.
Once you have checked whether your bank supports UPI payments or not, you need to download the UPI supporting app on your smartphone.
Make UPI payments through these apps:
BHIM, developed by NPCI, is one of the few commonly used apps that offer payment through UPI payments. Apart from this, there are some private apps like Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay, Amazon Pay etc. Keep in mind that your mobile number should be registered with your bank account for the purpose of verification.
How to set UPI
Once you have downloaded the UPI app, you have to select the bank from the given options. To verify that this is your bank account. Your bank will send you a one-time password (OTP). Once the OTP verification is done, your Virtual Payment Address (VPA) will be created.
How you can set up UPI account using BHIM app:
- Download and install the BHIM app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
- Choose your preferred language.
- After that select the SIM in which your mobile number is registered with your bank account.
- Set a four digit login password. You will need this four-digit password to access the app.
- Select and link your bank account. Enter the last 6 digits and expiry date of your debit card and set your UPI PIN.
Your account is now registered and now you can transfer money from your account and can also order money. Keep in mind that you cannot link your mobile wallet with UPI, only bank accounts can be linked with UPI. Apart from this, you can link more than one bank account with UPI.
How to transfer money through UPI:
There are three ways to transfer money through UPI-
1- Virtual Payment Address (VPA) of the receiver
2- Account number
3- By entering the IFSC code or QR code
Maximum amount you can transfer:
According to the NPCI website, at present, you can make UPI payments up to a maximum of Rs 1 lakh from an account in a day. However, different banks have different limits on this maximum payout. So you have to see what is the maximum payment that your bank allows.
