How can Virat Kohli get such strength that he should tell who will be the coach of the team: Ramchandra Guha

new Delhi
Historian Ramachandra Guha has strongly criticized the superstar culture in Indian cricket. In an interview given to Cricinfo about his new book ‘The Commonwealth of Cricket’, Guha also said that how can Team India’s captain Virat Kohli have so much power to tell who will be the coach and who is not.

Guha, formerly a member of the Committee of Administrators (COA), appointed by the Supreme Court to oversee the functioning of the BCCI, praised former cricket captain Bishan Singh Bedi but did not call the COA headed by Vinod Rai against Virat. Took it back.

Guha said, ‘Once Bedi had said something in an interview, she was banned in the 1974 Bangalore Test. The players wanted more strength, they should have been paid well, which took a long time. Bedi and Sunil Gavaskar’s generation did not get much money till the end of their careers. ‘

Questioning the powers given to the Indian captain, 62-year-old Guha said, “… but now making him a god and icon is a different thing.” I am talking about the dispute between Kohli and Anil Kumble. How can Kohli get this power to choose who will be the coach of the team or not. It doesn’t happen in any team, not anywhere. ‘

Guha also referred to the COA meeting in which he had asked Mahendra Singh Dhoni to change the grade of the central contract as he had retired from the Test. He said that the rest of the COA members were afraid to do so. He said, “Dhoni had decided that he would play only ODIs, not Test. I said (at the COA) that they should not get a grade-A contract. Clearly, this contract is for players who play all three formats. It is his decision that he does not want to play the Test.

The historian, conferred with Padma Bhushan, further said, ‘Then the COA said that there is fear in bringing Dhoni from A to B. More than the board, the Supreme Court COA headed by the senior IAS was scared. I thought this was a big problem. So I opposed it. When I couldn’t do anything, I wrote about it. ‘

Guha said about current BCCI president Saurabh Ganguly that he had given up arms. He said, ‘Ganguly has given up arms. There are some things they should not do. What he is doing is a conflict of interest. The kind of examples that Ganguly is setting is quite bad. I am saying it with sadness because I used to respect Ganguly a lot, as a cricketer and as a captain.

Describing former spinner Bedi as a great person, Guha said, “He is a great personality.” Never stop, never make excuses. Whatever happens, he says.
