I have performed so that I can call myself the best spinner: Ravichandran Ashwin

Chennai
Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has toured Australia on several occasions. But this recent tour will probably be the most special in his career. The 34-year-old off-spinner did well with the ball and implicated Australian batsmen, especially Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne. He also showed amazing off the bat when needed and played a big role in getting the Sydney Test drawn. On Sunday, Ashwin talked a lot about the tour in a conversation with reporters. Ashwin also spoke about his batting and bowling. He said that when he visits the SENA countries of the last two years, he feels that he has performed well.

When Ashwin was asked how often his batting used to be targeted, how important was the Sydney innings for him (Syndey Test), he said that batting has been targeted since the 2016 West Indies tour. But it is also important to keep in mind that at that time I was playing all three formats. Many times people do not understand the role of players playing only test matches or they understand how it works.

The off-spinner, who took 377 wickets in 74 Tests, admitted that it was a tough match for the only spinner in the Indian Test team. He said that since I am only playing Test cricket, the matter has remained only one match. I am competing for the only spinner in the team. If I am judged on the basis of my batting, then I think it would not be right to drop me only a couple of innings in a series. I am competing to make my place in the team. And when I am doing this, my first job is to take wickets. Looking at the last two years of SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia), I feel that I have performed so well that I can say that I am the best spinner.

Ashwin has taken a total of 39 wickets in 11 matches played in these countries since 2018. This includes 18 wickets in four Tests in Australia, 11 wickets in the same Test matches in England, three wickets in a Test match played in New Zealand and seven wickets in 2 Tests played in South Africa. On this recent tour of Australia, he took 12 wickets in 3 Tests.
