Former Sri Lankan veteran batsman Kumar Sangakkara has supported former Indian captain and current BCCI President Saurabh Ganguly for the new ICC President.

Sri Lankan veteran cricketer Kumar Sangakkara has supported Sourav Ganguly for the post of chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The former Sri Lankan captain said the Cricket Board of India (BCCI) chairman's 'sharp cricketing mind' and experience as an administrator make him a 'very suitable' contender for the role.

He said that the former Indian captain has an international mindset, which is necessary to remain free from bias while holding important positions. Sangakkara, the current president of Merrillbone Cricket Club (MCC), told India Today, “I think Saurabh Ganguly can bring change. I am a big fan of Dada (Ganguly), not just because of his status as a cricketer but I think he has a sharp cricket mind.

He said, 'He thinks of cricket's best interest at heart and when you are in the ICC, it should not be changed just because you are the BCCI President or the England and Wales Cricket Board or Sri Lanka Cricket or any other board. '
Sangakkara said, 'Your mindset should be international and there should be no discrimination about where you come from, like I am Indian, Sri Lankan, Australian or England. He should understand that I am a cricketer and I am doing what is best for all cricketing nations.
Sangakkara, 42, said that Ganguly has the ability to build relationships, which is important for an effective position in the governing body of cricket. He said, 'I have seen his work even before I became the BCCI President. Even before administration and coaching, how he built relationships with players from all over the world, his tenure in the MCC Cricket Committee.
Former BCCI president Shashank Manohar resigned as ICC chairman earlier this month. Emkong Khwaja of Hong Kong has been made the interim chairman until the elections are held. Sangakkara is not the only former international captain to have supported Ganguly. Graeme Smith, former South Africa captain and Cricket Director of Cricket South Africa, has also supported Ganguly for the post. Ganguly, however, recently said that he was in no hurry regarding the ICC post.
