England scored 263 for 3 on the first day of the first Test match against India on the strength of captain Joe Root and opener Dominic Sibley. Root hit a century in his 100th Test match and partnered 200 runs with Sibli.

Root (Joe Root) hit 14 fours and a six in his unbeaten innings of 197 balls. Sibli became the victim of Jasprit Bumrah on the third ball of the last over of the day (90th over). He faced 286 balls and scored 86 runs with the help of 12 fours.

While Sibley did a complete display of restraint in his innings, Root made some attractive shots. Fast bowler Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and spinners Ravichandran Ashwin, Shahbaz Nadeem and Washington Sundar made every effort but could not get out the route.

Earlier, openers Rory Burns and Sibley gave England a strong start by adding 63 runs for the first wicket. The two were heading towards a big partnership but Burns lost his wicket in the course of playing the non-essential reverse sweep shot off Ashwin. His easy catch was caught by wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.

New batsman Dan Lawrence was lbw to Bumrah. Indian captain Virat Kohli handed the ball to Ashwin in the eighth over. The openers Sibley and Burns played well in the first hour. Ishant and Bumrah, playing the first Test in India, played sensibly and did not let India get early success.

Earlier, England captain Joe Root won the toss and decided to bat. Sri Lanka tour Ben Stokes, Joffra Archer and Rory Burns returned to the team. Virat Kohli returned to the team after Paternity Leave. (Input from agency)
