Virat Kohli, captain of the Indian cricket team, praised Ishant Sharma’s commitment to Test cricket and said that he would choose limited-overs cricket to prolong his career. But he chose Test cricket.
Twenty-two-year-old Ishant will step into the third Test of Day Night against England starting on Wednesday, becoming the second fastest bowler in India to play 100 Tests after Kapil Dev.
‘This is a big achievement in modern cricket’
Kohli said in the press conference before the match, ‘This is a big achievement in modern cricket. It is not easy for any fast bowler to maintain his fitness and play hundred Tests. He could have opted for limited overs cricket but it is to his credit that he did not. Many people lose their motivation but Ishant has the skills and if he wanted, he could play four overs, ten overs cricket and regular IPL. But he became completely devoted to Test cricket.

‘… then we used to be roommates’
Ishant played the last ODI in 2016 and the last T20 match in 2013. Reviving old memories, Kohli said, ‘I have known Ishant for years. He started playing state cricket with me. We were roommates from the very first season and played Ranji Trophy together for many years. He was fast asleep in the afternoon when he was selected in the Indian team. I had to drop her off the bed and tell her that she had been selected. He could not believe it. Where did we start together and today he is on the threshold of playing the 100th Test. I am so happy for her.’
