Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting wants the team management to be struggling with poor form in the first Test against India starting on Thursday which relies on Burns. Burns has been able to score 62 runs in the last nine first-class innings and his highest score was 29 runs. He scored 4,0,0,1 runs in two practice matches.
Ponting told Channel Seven, ‘I’ll choose Joe Burns. I have heard that people are saying that he has not done well but I will believe him. ‘
He said, “He has scored 40 runs in the last Test innings and has scored four Test centuries. His average is around 40. I will trust him because I believe he is capable of scoring big. ‘
Ponting also said that wicketkeeper batsman Matthew Wade should start the innings, which would make it to the final XI for 21-year-old all-rounder Cameron Green. He said, ‘Matthew Wade should start the innings with Burns. This will also create a left-right combination. Last time the Indian team came here, we had two batsmen in our top order and the Indian bowlers kept them under pressure.
