South African all-rounder Chris Morris became the most expensive selling player in IPL history and was bought by Rajasthan Royals on Thursday. This franchise added Morris to the former champions team for 16.25 crores. Krishnappa Gautam, an ‘uncapped’ (not playing international level) player from Karnataka, also made headlines by selling for Rs 9.25 crore.
The player who was released by Royal Challengers Bangalore last year would hardly have thought that he would become the most expensive player in IPL history this time. All-rounders and foreign fast bowlers were bought in a huge amount this time in the IPL auction and South African all-rounder Chris Morris topped it.
8 franchisees bought 57 players, 4 cricketers sold for more than 14 crores for the first time, Morris remains the most expensive
Karnataka player Krishnappa Gowtham also made headlines by selling for Rs 9.25 crore here. Tamil Nadu batsman Shah Rukh Khan was bought for a whopping Rs 5.25 crore, more than his base price of Rs 20 lakh.

Maxwell and Jameson also shine
Australia’s star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was successful in securing an amount of Rs 14.25 crore, whose bid was won by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Jameson is known for his performance in Test cricket, but RCB bought him for Rs 15 crore.
14 crores to Richardson.
Punjab Kings, which had the highest amount among the eight teams before the auction, bought Australian fast bowler Jay Richardson for Rs 14 crore to fill the shortage in the bowling department. The 24-year-old had taken the most wickets in the Big Bash League recently.
Meredith also made headlines
Punjab spent eight crores to buy another Australian fast bowler Rylee Meredith, making him the most expensive selling ‘uncapped’ foreign player in IPL history. The 24-year-old has played 34 T20 matches in which he has taken 43 wickets.

Yuvraj left behind
Morris had a base price of Rs 75 lakh and four teams bid for him, after which a bid was made to take him between Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings. Finally Rajasthan bought him in the record bid. He surpassed India’s all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, who was bought by Delhi Capitals in 2015 for Rs 16 crore.
Virat Kohli is still the most expensive
Even now, the most expensive player in the IPL will remain Virat Kohli, who was retained by Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs 17 crore. Jake Lucht Macrum, a Rajasthan Royals official, said of the purchase of Morris, “We had talked to Chris before the auction and he is one of the experienced players who are right for this amount. We have re-balanced our team, they will play an important role for us.
Arjun Tendulkar also sold
The great Sachin Tendulkar’s son Arjun Tendulkar’s cricketing career got a boost when Mumbai Indians bought him. Sachin is now playing the mentor after playing for Mumbai Indians and the same franchise bought left arm fast bowler Arjun at his base price of Rs 20 lakh. The decision, however, is not surprising as he has been playing the role of Nat Boller for the franchise for the past few seasons. The 21-year-old Arjun made his debut for the Mumbai senior team recently when he played in the National T20 Championship Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament against Haryana.
Kaif said, could afford to buy Smith more
Mohammad Kaif, assistant coach of Delhi Capitals, said his franchise could afford to buy former Australia captain Steve Smith. He said, ‘We are lucky to have bought Steve Smith cheaply. We were ready to spend even more money to buy them. ‘
