Lionel Messi scored two goals during Barcelona's 5–0 win over Alaves in the final round to record the 'Golden Boot' for the record seventh-most goals in a season in the Spanish Football League La Liga. Messi scored a total of 25 goals in the league, four goals more than his close rival Karim Benzema. Benzema could not score a goal in a 2–2 draw between Real Madrid and Leganes.
Messi became the first player to score the most goals in seven different seasons in the league. He achieved this despite not playing in the opening matches of the season due to injury. The Argentina star scored 25 goals in 33 matches. Earlier, he was on par with Telmo Zara.
He also equaled Hugo Sanzech's record of scoring the most goals in four consecutive seasons. Messi said on Sunday, “Personal achievements come later. It would have been nice if we had been successful in winning the title as well.
Anshu Fati, Luis Suarez and Nelson Semedo also scored goals against Barcelona on Sunday. Barcelona finished second in the league after Real Madrid.
