Former chief selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth has targeted Sanjay Manjrekar, a cricketer-turned-commentator. Manjrekar questioned the inclusion of KL Rahul in the Indian team for the tour of Australia.
Rahul is in great form in the Indian Premier League 2020. He is the highest run-scorer so far this season. He has been selected in the Indian team for the Border-Gavaskar series to be held in December-January.
Manjrekar had said that it is starting a wrong tradition when a player is being selected in the Test team based on his performance in the IPL. He had said that Ranji Trophy players are going to be very disappointing.
Srikanth looked extremely angry with Manjrekar’s talk. He said in his YouTube channel ‘Cheeky Cheeka’, ‘It is Sanjay Manjrekar’s job to ask questions, then leave them out.’
Srikanth said, ‘Question on inclusion of KL Rahul in Test cricket? He has done well in Test cricket. I cannot agree with any reason that Sanjay Manjrekar has asked questions on this. I don’t think I can agree that. You should not raise a question just to create controversy. KL Rahul has performed brilliantly in every format. Look at his test record once.
Rahul has played 36 Test matches for India in which he has scored 2006 runs with the help of 5 centuries and 11 half-centuries.
Srikanth said, ‘Sanjay Manjrekar is talking about idle. I do not agree with this. ‘ He said, “There may be a lack of consistency in Rahul’s performance but it is Rahul who made his Test debut in Australia and scored a century.” He is a good player against fast bowling. Understand this, he plays very well against fast bowling.
Rahul was dropped from the team after a poor series against the West Indies last year. In this series, Rahul had scored just 101 runs in four innings. He was also not included in the India A tour of New Zealand this year.
Srikkanth further advised Manjrekar that he should focus on other cricketers in the country besides Mumbai players only.
The 60-year-old former captain said, ‘Sanjay Manjrekar, you can’t think beyond Bombay. this is the problem. We are doing the right thing. Manjrekar cannot think other than Bombay. For people like Manjrekar, everything is Bombay, Bombay and Bombay. They should think ahead of Bombay. ‘
The team captained by Virat Kohli will play the Test series from 17 December. Before that he has to play a limited overs series.
