India's ancient football club Mohun Bagan swept across the globe on Wednesday when it became the first club in the country to appear on the Nasdaq (NASDAQ) billboard on Times Square in New York. It happened on the occasion of 'Mohun Bagan Day', which is celebrated on 29 July every year to celebrate the team's famous IFA Shield title victory by defeating the East Yorkshire Regiment in 1911. In this way Mohun Bagan became the first Indian club to end the British dominance in the tournament with a 2–1 win.
The 131-year-old club, founded in the year 1889, has no shortage of worldwide supporters. But the US Stock Exchange has its logo and its colors on its billboard.
Debashish Dutta, the top official of Mohun Bagan said, 'It is a matter of great pride for all the fans and supporters of Mohun Bagan. This shows the club's stature. No club has reached such a place in Indian sports, so it is very important which is very different. '
The club had earlier tweeted, “Nasdaq's photo is proof that Mohun Bagan is involved in a different league.” A big day for Mohun Bagan. Happy Mohun Bagan de Mariners. '
