New Zealand beat Australia (NZ vs AUS T20) by 53 runs in the first T20 International to take a 1-0 lead in the 5-match series. The Kangaroo team, captained by Aaron Finch, collapsed for 131 runs in 17.3 overs as they chased down the target of 185 runs set by the host Kiwi team.

Australia won the toss and invited New Zealand to bat first. At one point Finch’s first bowling decision seemed to be proved right when Kangaroo bowlers Danielle Sams and Zahe Richardson dismissed the hosts’ 3 wickets for a total of 19 runs with openers Martin Guptill (naught), Tim Seifert ( One) and captain Kane Williamson (12).

Devon Conway and Glenn Phillips then took over the innings. Both shared a 74-run stand on the fourth wicket to take the total to 93. Phillips was caught by Michel Marsh by Marcus Stoinis for the fourth blow to the Kiwi team. Phillips was dismissed for 30 off 20 balls.

Conway joined James Neesham after Phillips was dismissed. Both added 47 runs for the fifth wicket. Conway then shared an unbeaten 44-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Mitchell Santner. In this way the Kiwi team scored 184 runs for 5 wickets. From Australia, Samms and Zahe Richardson took two wickets each while Stoinis got one wicket.
