Muttiah Muralitharan, Sri Lanka’s great off-spinner and the world’s most successful bowler, has praised Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Muralitharan has said that he expects Ashwin to take 700 wickets in Tests. He can even take 800 wickets.
Nathan Lyon, who will play his 100th Test match in Brisbane, has 396 wickets so far while Ashwin has taken 377 wickets in 74 Tests.
Muralitharan, who took 800 wickets in Test cricket, said, ‘Ashwin has a chance because he is a great bowler. Also, I don’t think any other young bowler will be able to get 800 wickets. Perhaps Nathan Lyon does not have the talent to reach here. He is close to 400 wickets but he will have to work hard to reach 800.
Muralitharan is not associated with Sri Lankan cricket but he is with Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. Murali said, “The problem with Test cricket is that T20 and ODI have changed the rules a lot.”
He said, “When I used to play, the batsmen were technically very good and the wickets were also flat. Now they want to end the Test matches in three days. In our era, bowlers had to work harder to spin the ball and had to do some magic to get the result. Nowadays if you bowl on the right line and length for some time, you get five wickets. It is sure to happen because batsmen cannot stay without attacking for long.
