Reliance Jio added 89.90 million (about 9 crore) new wireless subscribers in the year 2019. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released a new annual report for 2019 titled ‘Yearly Performance Indicators of Indian Telecom Sector’. The report shows figures of increase and decrease in year-on-year subscribers of telecom providers.
As per the report, Reliance Jio’s total wireless subscribers increased to 370.2 million in December 2019 as compared to December 2018 (280.12 million). Reliance Jio became the market leader by the end of 2019, gaining 32.14 per cent market share in terms of wireless telephone subscriber base.

While Reliance Jio achieved a bumpy edge in 2019, Vodafone Idea and Airtel lost millions of wireless subscribers. According to a TRAI report, Vodafone Idea lost 86.13 million subscribers in 2019 and Airtel 12.96 million subscribers. Vodafone Idea subscribers were 418.75 million in December 2018, which decreased to 332.61 million in December 2019. The company’s market share fell from 35.61 per cent to 28.89 per cent.
Airtle also lost its customers this year but not as much as Vodafone Idea. The company had 340.26 million subscribers in December 2018, which declined to 327.30 million in December 2018. Airtel’s market share also declined slightly, from 28.93 per cent to 28.43 per cent.

State-run telecom company BSNL added 3.74 million subscribers last year. BSNL had 118.12 million subscribers in December 2018 which increased to 118.12 million in December 2019. The market share of BSNL was 10.26 per cent at the end of last year.
According to the TRAI report, Reliance Jio (370.87 million), Bharti Airtel (140.40 million), Vodafone Idea (118.45 million), BSNL (23.96 million) and the top 5 broadband service providers in December 2019 in terms of subscribers including wired and wireless. Atria were convergence technologies (1.52 million). In the wireless broadband segment, Reliance Jio achieved a market share of 57.56 million with 370.92 million subscribers. This was followed by Airtel with 21.97 per cent market share with 137.98 million subscribers.
TRAI revealed that the number of telephone subscribers in India increased to 1,197.87 million in 2019 December. The number stood at 1,172.44 million in December 2018. This means a decline of about 2.12 percent. Talk about the total number of telephone subscribers, in 2019 Reliance Jio added 90.95 million net subscribers. Apart from Reliance Jio and BSNL, all telecom operators saw a drop in subscribers.
