“The great Bengali actor Saumitra Chatterjee’s health worsened on Saturday when he stopped reacting to treatment, raising concerns of doctors being treated at a private hospital here,” an official told PTI.
Dr, who is leading the team of doctors treating the actor. Arindam Kar told PTI, “Although the 85-year-old’s organs were functioning well ‘, the platelet count has dropped and his blood urea and sodium levels have increased. “(Soumitra) Chatterjee’s consciousness is much lower than it was 72 hours ago. Not sure which side it is headed. We have received reports of tests and we can deduce that COVID encephalopathy is progressing. “
The doctor further noted that the ‘Apur Sansar’ actor is not responding to treatment despite steroid use and other long-term efforts.
Dr. Kar said, “Although his lungs and blood pressure are still working well, there are points to be concerned about. His platelet count is reduced. We are trying to find out the reason for that. We will make some tough calls tomorrow. “
“We are doing our best. But for some time the best effort is not enough for someone who is suffering from the disease at their age ”, the doctor concluded.
Soumitra Chatterjee is known for his collaboration with Oscar Award-winning director Satyajit Ray, with whom he has worked in 14 films. His first film ‘Apur Sansar’ was written and directed by the master himself. The film also marked Sharmila Tagore’s debut in the film industry.
