Virat Kohli on Depression: Virat Kohli, who was in depression in 2014, said that he was a companion, yet felt alone.

New Delhi
Team India’s captain Virat Kohli, who was among the world’s greatest batsmen, was also suffering from depression at one time. Virat told that in 2014, when his performance on the tour of England was very poor and continuously failing, he started to feel that he is alone in the world.

In a conversation with former England player Mark Nichols, Virat admitted that he had gone through a difficult period of his career during that tour. When asked if Kohli had ever been in depression, he said, “Yes, it happened to me.” It was not good thinking that you are not able to score runs and I think all the batsmen feel at some stage that you have absolutely no control over anything.

The 2014 England tour was a disappointment for Kohli. He scored in 10 innings of five Tests at an average of 13.50. His scores were 1, 8, 25, 0, 39, 28, 0,7, 6 and 20 runs. After this he made a brilliant comeback in the Australia round by scoring 692 runs.

He said about the England tour, ‘You don’t know how to overcome it. This was a period when I could do nothing to change things. I felt as if I am the only person in the world.

The 32-year-old Kohli recalled that he had people to support him in his life, but he still felt alone. He said that he then needed professional help. He said, ‘Personally it was new for me that you feel alone despite being part of a larger group. I would not say that I had no one to talk to but there was no professional to talk to who could understand what I was going through. I think it is a big factor. I want to see it changing. ‘

The Indian captain, who has scored 70 centuries so far in international career, believes that the issue of mental health cannot be ignored as it could ruin a player’s career. Kohli said, ‘There should be such a person who can go anywhere anytime and say that listen, I am feeling like this. I am not feeling sleepy. I do not want to get up in the morning. I do not trust myself. What should I do.’

He said, ‘Many people feel like this for a long time. It takes months. This can continue throughout the cricket season. People do not get over it. I feel the need for professional help with all sincerity. ‘ Kohli is currently in Ahmedabad for the Test series against England. Both teams have won 1–1 matches so far. The third Test match will be played from 24 February.
