Former Indian team opener Aakash Chopra has named Mayank Agarwal and Rohit Sharma as the second best opening pair in current Test cricket. They have made this assessment considering the performance of the salute pairs in the last one or two years.
Chopra said this on his YouTube channel about the role of opening pairs in Test cricket in the current era.
Chopra, however, admitted that the level of Test Openers has reduced nowadays. During this, he also mentioned some successful salute pairs of the past.
He said that there was a time when we used to have very good Test Opening pairs in the world – Gautam Gambhir – Virender Sehwag, Matthew Hayden-Justin Langer, Gordon Greincher-Desmond Hans, Alister Cook-Andrew Strauss and Graeme Smith-Herschel Gibbs.
Chopra believes that the present-day openers tend to struggle slightly in front of the moving ball.
He said, “But nowadays openers seem a little uncomfortable in front of swing bowling. You are constantly attacked with a new ball and you have no answer to it.
The former Delhi opener saw England batsmen Rory Burns and Dom Sibley perform well against the West Indies but it is still too early to take a decision on them.
Chopra admitted that South Africa's Dean Alger and Dean Alger and Markram were targeted.
Akash Chopra said, 'They have been opening together for a long time. Elgar has scored some runs in India. The pair averaged 12.53, which is quite poor. His highest score has been 56. Markerum has an average of 25.6 and Elgar's 29.3. Naturally, when their own batting average is low, the partnership average will also be less.
Warner also discussed Australia's Joe Burns and David Warner. He said, 'They have done well though. Their partnership average is 65.4. Warner has a batting average of over 55 and Burns is scoring at an average of 41.8. It cannot be called too bad. Can it be called the best now? Warner has not fared well in India and it will be assessed when Burns arrives.
Chopra called New Zealand's Tom Latham and Tom Blundell's pair the best opening pair of all time. He said that the pair averaged 47.14 and scored a lot of runs on home grounds. Latham averages 52.9 and Blundell has 41.3.
Chopra called the pair the best because they have scored most of the runs on home grounds in difficult conditions.
