Australia team captain Tim Paine on Wednesday dismissed fitness problems of key batsman Steve Smith of his batting order, saying he only had a stiff back and would play in the opening Test against India here.
Smith did not participate in the football season after practicing some stretching and running drills during the team’s training session at the Adelaide Oval on Tuesday and went straight to the dressing room, to some annoyance.

The day-night Test against India will begin on Thursday. Penn said that this is not a serious injury and one day’s rest will be enough for this star cricketer. Penn said at a media conference here before the match, ‘We expect Steve to play in the match. He has had a stiff back several times before and if you bat as much on the net as he does, it can happen.
He said, ‘He has had a problem in the back before and he was given rest by taking precautions yesterday. Definitely he will play tomorrow, he will find a way to score runs as usual.
