Following the superb innings of Captain Smriti Mandhana (68), the Trailblazers defeated Supernovas by 16 runs in the final of the Women’s T20 Challenge Final thanks to the strong performance of the bowlers. The Trailblazers won their first title in this T20 tournament.
At the small ground in Sharjah, the Supernovas held the Trailblazers to a score of 118 for 8 despite Smriti Mandhana’s (68) innings, but Harmanpreet Kaur’s team could not achieve such a low target and managed to score 102 for 7 wickets. For Supernovas, spinner Radha Yadav definitely took 5 wickets but the team had to face defeat in the end.
Supernovas prevented trailblazers for 118 runs
Despite a brilliant half-century innings by skipper Smriti Mandhana (68), Supernovas allowed the Trailblazers to score 118 for 8 in the final of the Women’s T20 Challenge with the help of Radha Yadav’s five-wicket haul. Mandhana scored 68 off 49 balls but none of the other batsmen could run. Radha Yadav took five wickets for 16 runs. Poonam Yadav and Sasikala Sirivardane got 1-1 wickets.
Harman’s team batsman did not work
Chasing a target of 119 runs, Captain Harmanpreet Kaur mustered a 30-run knock for the Supernovas but none of the others were able to settle at the crease. Sasikala Sirivardane scored 19, wicketkeeper Tania Bhatia scored 14 and Jemima Rodriguez scored 13 runs.
3 wickets fell in the 19th over, Salma’s amazing
Salma Khatoon turned the match in the 19th over of the innings and 3 wickets fell from 4 balls. Anuja Patil (8) was run out on the second ball, after which Salma bowled Harmanpreet on the next ball. Then Pooja Vastrakar (0) was caught by Sophie off the 5th ball, making the score 94 runs for 7 wickets.
Mandhana hit her first half-century of the season
Captain Smriti Mandhana of the Trailblazers hit a brilliant half-century and also scored the top score this season. He scored 68 runs with the help of five fours and three sixes. Mandhana broke the silence by hitting a four and a six over Poonam Yadav and meanwhile also completed her half-century off 38 balls but Tanya Bhatia ended her innings with an excellent wicketkeeping that shocked the Trailblazers’ death overs strategy.
Radha’s ‘punch’, 4 wickets fell in the last over of the innings
Spinner Radha Yadav became the first bowler to take 5 wickets in this tournament. He caught Sophie Ecclestone (1) on the first ball of the last over of the last over at the hands of Selman, then on the fourth ball, Harleen Deol (4) sent the pavilion. On the 5th ball of the over, Jhulan Goswami (1) was stumped out while Chantham (0) was run out on the last ball. Radha also took 2 wickets in the 18th over of the innings, when Deepti Sharma (9) and Richa Ghosh (10) were caught by Attapattu.
3 wickets of Supernovas fell for 37 runs
Chasing a target of 119 runs, Supernovas’ 3 wickets fell to 37 runs. Supernovas opener C Attapattu (6) was lbw out by Sophie Ecclestone. In the second over of the innings Ecclestone showed the path of the pavilion to Attapattu on the last ball. The on-field umpire gave a not out first but Attapattu had to return to the pavilion after taking the DRS. He played 9 balls with 1 four. Then Tania Bhatia (14) and Jemima Rodriguez (13) were hunted by Deepti Sharma.
45 runs in Powerplay, Mandhana’s amazing
Captain Smriti Mandhana adopted an aggressive attitude from the beginning. He hit beautiful six off long off after hitting 2 fours off off-spinner Anuja Patil for the second over of the innings. If the trailblazers reached 45 runs in the powerplay, Mandhana’s contribution was the main one. Mandhana then welcomed Pooja Vastrakar with a six but the spinners soon curbed the runs.
Dotin’s bat did not work
Opener Diandra Dottin (20 runs off 32 balls) held one end but could not rotate the strike. She also got a living, but could not take advantage of it and returned to the pavilion with a waving catch in the air. There was no boundary for 32 balls in the middle.
Only 17 runs scored in the last 5 overs.
Deepti Sharma, who batted aggressively, also managed to score only 9 runs while Richa Ghosh (10) also practiced a catch to Chamari Attapattu. Radha Yadav dismissed Sophie Ecclestone (1), Harleen Deol (4) and Jhulan Goswami (1) in the last over after dismissing both of them. The Trailblazers scored just 17 runs in the last five overs.
