Former India team opener Virender Sehwag is unhappy over not giving Yuzvendra Chahal a chance in the first ODI of the series against England. The Indian team gave an opportunity to debutants Krunal Pandya and the famous Krishna in this match. On the other hand, Kuldeep Yadav also became part of the playing Illave on Tuesday. But Chahal, who struggled in the T20 series against England, was dropped.
In a conversation with Cricbuzz, Sehwag said that perhaps a different scale is being tried for the selection of batsman and bowler.
Sehwag said, ‘You dismiss the bowler only after a bad match but you gave KL Rahul four chances and then sat out in the fifth match. So if the bowlers do not perform well then why not give you so many opportunities.
He said, ‘If he was Jasprit Bumrah and his four matches did not go well, would you think of getting Bumrah out of the team too? No, you would say, ‘He is a good bowler and will come back.’
Sehwag said, ‘Yuzvendra Chahal is your top 20 bowler. He gives you wickets and he played 2-3 bad matches and now he is out of the team. One is among the top bowlers of the ICC rankings and one is in the batsmen, so what is the scale about the selection between them. I did not understand this idea. ‘
He went on to say, ‘Yes, if you lose the series due to any pair of bowlers that they could not take wickets, like Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin could not take once.’
He said, ‘We lost the Champions Trophy final in that tournament. Our bowlers were unable to take wickets in the middle overs. So after that there was a change in thinking and wrist spinners were given a chance. The rationale is that wrist spinners are better. Now you removed Chahal, the wrist spinner, and brought the finger spinner. I think the reason behind this is to strengthen the batting as well.
